Where Does the Time Go?
I’ve been really busy lately - in addition to picking up a couple of new clients, some former clients have resurfaced to use my services again. Many small business owners have told me that they’re much busier than usual this summer, for whatever reason. It’s great to be busy, but it sure makes the time go quickly! I didn’t realize how quickly until I decided to catch up on my blog reading and saw how far behind I am!
One benefit to this is that by reviewing all the posts a blogger has made over the last two to three weeks, it becomes much clearer which ones are packed with good information and ideas that I will want to watch closely, and which are not worth it for me to follow. Here are some of the most interesting things I came across in my reading today:
Erin Blaskie of Business Services, ETC. recently wrote an entry entitled Virtual Assistance Defined by One Person? Before I even read the entry, I knew which "one person" she was referring to. There are as many definitions of "virtual assistant" out there as there are virtual assistant organizations, but to my knowledge there’s only one organization that declares its definition to be the only one that is valid - and it is also the most rigid. Erin’s entry was sparked by a recent discussion on one of the VA forums about whether a VA who works as a subcontractor is truly a VA. Many people feel strongly that a true VA works alone and only with their own clients - they neither use subcontractors nor work as subcontractors. Erin’s opinion is the same as mine - if you work "virtually" and you "assist" others, you are, by definition, a "virtual assistant." What really amazes me is the amount of discussion that takes place around this topic - you would think the future of the world depended on the answer.
Alex Fayle has taken a break from Someday Syndrome while he travels, and his sister Elizabeth has been blogging in his place. It’s very interesting to read her entries, as her writing style is very different from her brother’s, yet she still points out the life lessons in every story she tells.
Christina Favreau, The Savvy Entrepreneur, shared five links after being tagged by someone else. I know this is called a "meme" but I have avoided using that word to date, because I wasn’t sure what it meant or the proper way to use it. People close to me know that I’m "the word lady" so I have just looked it up on Wikipedia, which says that:
Generally speaking, an Internet meme is any faddish popular phenomenon on the Internet. The term may refer to the content itself, the subject of the content, or the phenomenon of its spread. It is discrete, identifiable content as opposed to more general things like a philosophy or a trend. It is spread voluntarily, rather than by trickery, compulsion, predetermined path, or completely automated means. Some people liken Internet memes to a form of art, and digital art on the net to a form of meme. An Internet meme may stay the same over time or it may mutate over time, by chance or by the aggregation of commentary, alternate and parody versions, and news about the meme.
So now we know!
Even though I wasn’t tagged, I love memes (it’s said you have to use a word 10 times for it to become part of your vocabulary - that’s 1) and I’m an Internet junkie, so I am going to have to play along! Not today though… you’ll have to come back next time!
