Technology Never Ceases to Amaze Me

Thirty years ago, if you’d told me the day would come when the majority of office workers (and many other workers) would have a computer on their own desk, I wouldn’t have believed you.

Twenty years ago, if you’d told me there would be a network linking computers all around the world, I’d have been skeptical.

Ten years ago, if you’d told me this technology would lead to my owning and operating a successful business from my home, I would have laughed.

You’d think by now I would "get it," especially since I’m such a computer geek, but my immediate reaction when I read about Microsoft Surface in Erin Blaskie’s blog was that it was a practical joke. However, a quick visit to the Microsoft website confirmed that this amazing product is being launched next winter, and if you happen to be in New York City today, you can see a demo at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers on Seventh Avenue. It doesn’t seem possible that anything so powerful could actually be affordable for home use, but then again, neither did a computer on every desk, all networked together, allowing large numbers of people to collaborate on projects without ever meeting in person.

  1. Hi Janet,
Just checked out that product. I’m skeptical of anything developed by MS. It always looks great and the idea is SO cool but it never actually works the way it is supposed to.
Once you go Mac, you never go back.

  2. I’ve thought about switching to a Mac, but don’t want to have to replace all my software!

  3. It was easy for us. The day we moved to Montreal, our car was broken into and all of our software (original disks and back-up data) were stolen. We always carry them in our car in case anything happens to the computer on the moving van.
So far the only software we had to buy for the Mac was: MS Office for Mac (which runs better than it does for PC), Antidote (my French grammar/speller program), Quicken for Mac and my husband bought Parallels (which runs Windows on a Mac) so that he could play his Fantasy Hockey games. I should buy a good graphics program but I’m too busy right now anyway.
Even though we had to purchase stuff it is still worth the price of NEVER having to re-boot. NEVER having error messages and NEVER having to defrag/optimize the disk.

  4. It does look like a cool tool - kind of like the Mac OS but on a table. I´m a PC user, but will likely go for Linux or Mac for my next computer now that I don´t need to interface with clients often.
