Ultimate Guide to Productivity

I was very excited to read on Kathie Thomas’ soho-life.com blog about a new group writing project started by Ben Yoskovitz on his Instigator Blog.

The idea is for participating bloggers to post their best productivity tips and to tag others to do the same.

Here is my tip:

Empty your inbox (both paper and electronic) every day. People have a tendency to leave items there as a reminder that they need to act on them, but too often they just get buried and forgotten. Instead, enter the action on your to-do list and put the email or document in an appropriate folder to be referenced when you’re ready to work on it.

I’m tagging: Monica Ricci, Cristina Favreau, Alex Fayle and Ariane Benefit.

  1. Great tip Janet, thanks for paying it forward, or should I say ‘tagging’!

  2. For all mothers: save $5 a week out of your grocery money and put it away. Every 6 months take the money and go to a hotel for the night ALONE! (no hubby/boyfriend, no kids). Pick a hotel in your home town if you have to but GO! Have a long hot bath, read a book, take control of the remote control, order room service of what YOU want to eat. AND DON’T feel the least bit guilty!
When you come back you will be well rested and more productive!

  3. This is a solid one, Janet — I used to use my inbox as a storage space, but no more… I’ve been pretty vigilant at keeping it at zero for about a year now. I can’t tell you how good that feels!

  4. Yes, yes and yes. I can’t agree more. Anyone who depends on email for communcation, you have to do this. It will change how effective and productive your email can be. Great tip Janet.

  5. Okay, I was actually thinking about productivity (since Monica mentioned her inclusion in the Zen Habits blog) and now with this, I guess tonight’s post will be about productivity. Thanks for the making the decision for me.

  6. Thanks for the tag, Janet.

    Here’s my ultimate productivity tip:

My love/hate relationship with the kitchen ended when I started planning meals. Usually done on the weekend, with pen and paper in hand, I sit at the kitchen table with my recipe books (or use Recipezaar — I swear, it’s saved my marriage on numerous occasions) and plan all my meals for the week ahead. From that, I make my grocery list and go shopping. Not only does this save time, it also saves money and prevents the frustration of going through the aisles and not really knowing what to buy.
